Outstanding Quote

May 10, 2009

As I was browsing through Tim Colton’s Maritime Memo, I noticed some interesting figures on a chart detailing the latest US Navy and US Coast Guard shipbuilding budgets. For the Navy, here was Tim’s reaction:

$16 billion buys four big ships and five small ships.  Wow!

In contrast the USCG is building 45 vessels of various sizes for less than $700 million! The coasties are adding vessels which are just right for the type of anti-piracy missions and Third World arms smuggling the Navy needs be focused on these days, rather than the giant sea battles of yesteryear which the latter insists on planning for. Makes you think about budget priorities.
