Dueling Headlines

January 21, 2010

The First headline from Navy Times (subscribers edition only):

Despite Rumors, QDR Unlikely To Shrink Carrier Fleet

Makes possible the Second, also from Navy Times (subscribers edition only):

Outlook Dim For Beefing Up Surface Fleet, Leaders Warn.

And from our cousins across the Atlantic, the British, comes two like headlines. The first is from DefPro:

UK Aircraft Carriers And JSF Orders Not Under Threat

Which may have something to do with our next title, via Defense News:

U.K. Budget Cuts May Target Royal Navy Amphib Vessels

The needs then grows for a bigger navy, able to perform a multitude of tasks, on call when needed. Clearly the large deck aircraft carrier increasingly is a hindrance rather than a help to this goal.

Note, these are not mutually exclusive statements.

Think most people in the Navy would believe it was a good thing if numbers did not decline. Certainly no increase is really expected any time soon.

How would they target the RN amphib. vessels? They are all newer vessels. Maybe they mean canceling the Ocean replacement?
