Visby Video

January 24, 2010

This video is a superb intro into the Swedish Visby class corvette. There’s a longer, more detailed version at Military Photos.

Thanks to D.E. for the link!

Not surprised Chuck since their are geared mainly for Baltic ops. Global Security says 2300 miles at 15kts

As I recall the range is short. Any specifics?

Mike Burleson said : “Oh, and they are operational:”

    Well, sort of.

    1) HMS Helsingborg and HMS Härnösand were delivered in version 4, which means they still lack SSM and torpedoes (just to mention the effectors).

    2) As I understand it, they will be ready for domestic operations some time in April this year, and for missions abroad some take in the last quarter of 2010, October or November.

Sproutey-The sources I have read list from $184 million US to $220 million or 1/3 the price of the LCS.

Endre is correct in that these have taken a long time to enter service. Sweden’s being a small navy with few if any external threats she has been in no hurry. The stealthy composite hull has been a challenge and being such a unique design it it probably better that your tests were done on a less than 1000 ton hull than a 14,000 ton platform where you can’t afford any mistakes!

Nice indeed, however, the Visby currently has yet to properly enter service, and is about as armed as a Coast Guard cutter – not really a fair output in combat power compared to the cost.

It would be interesting to see how the Visby’s composite construction costs compare to that of the LCS’s. In the video below, Kockums really touts the shock resistance value of their composite hulls. And isn’t there supposed to be a Visby Plus variant in the works? (Video)

Surely this is just the kind of thing that the Royal Navy needs for Coastal and medium range defence/policing.
How much does one of these cost?
