Frequently Asked Questions

January 25, 2010

Notice to your extreme right a new FAQ Page for New Wars. Nothing fancy and mostly for the lay public. It is a work in progress and any constructive criticism is appreciated.

    Mike,

If a NEWS section were to be created, then it would need a ‘timeliness’ cycle to what remains as news. I would think that two weeks would be an initial baseline before anything got removed. But if usage occurs at a low rate, then maybe extend that out to as much as four weeks. And for any items ‘retired’ from the News thread then place them into a monthly-based set of News Archives (just as you already have monthly-based archives for the entire blog).

My idea is that I see so much in the way of interesting items that I just cannot find an easy way to fit them into the regular features of the blog by using the regular comment function. There is so much right now about how naval & maritime assets are being used to assist in Haiti, yet I just don’t see placing them in the weekly Sea Links thread. And same rings true for items relating to Somali piracy and other topics of interest to us. I just think the blog needs a working area for posting news whether its import is great or small.

    Bill,

I just don’t know about that suggestion of yours regarding the meaning of LCS… There are potential dangers with entering such topical content into the FAQ. Our own systems might suffer from buffer overflows and so crash as a consequence of all those ‘alternative’ meanings so far offered for that acronym LCS… ;-)

D.E. that is a great idea and I do really appreciate all the links. Let me think about how that will work and I will get back to you.

    Mike,

I have a suggestion for a different, information section termed NEWS. When I see something new and informative it has been my habit to place such in the latest Sea Links thread. Yet those weekly Sea Links threads do get pushed downwards on the blog over the course of each week. So, how about a simple News section where comments regarding news-worthy items of interest to this blog might be entered. I point to my recent comments on the Visby class corvettes and the call for activation of that ‘dinosaur’ of a hospital ship USNS Mercy as examples of news items that I placed in Sea Links and which might better be placed in a News section, if such were available.

Just place it over in the right-hand column, say between SEARCH and CATEGORY CLOUD or between the latter and RECENT POSTS.

What? No “What does the LCS acronym mean?” in the FAQ section?

    ;-)
