Today News Wars set another record today of 500,000 hits, having just surpassed 400,000 at the turn of the year, barely making 50,000 just one year ago. I am overwhelmed by the interest in the blog, and I take ZERO credit, since all I do is show up everyday. YOU are the ones which keep coming back, and keep the juices flowing in the comments.

Here is my theory for the growth:YOUR opinion matters. Whether you are a professional or not, apparently you agree with my own opinion that we shouldn’t be patting the Navy leaders on the back for giving us a smaller fleet than we’ve had in a century. This is nothing to be proud of, especially since they have been awash in funds for several decades, now  surpassing Cold War era spending. It is also historically unprecedented for the Fleet to shrink rather than expand during an era of sustained conflict, as has been ongoing in the Gulf. I don’t care if all we are building is coastal monitors, the fact is, the Navy is in decline, and the leadership has no concern.

Neither should the Air Force be lauded for only building less than 200 new fighters this past decade, and these irrelevant to the wars we are fighting now. I could excuse the fact that they aren’t building COIN prop planes, which is all we really need. What is impossible to overlook is our multimission legacy planes are winning all our wars without replacement, and will likely have to soldier on into another decade without relief.

Apparently many of you feel the same way, or else you wouldn’t be coming back time after time.  We don’t always have to agree with every minute point, but I think all agree doing business as usual at the Pentagon, purchasing only bigger, and more expensive weapons, expected to do the work of numerous older platforms is failing us in a new era of conflict.

Thanks as always for your interest.

There has to be some way to stop the procurement train-wreck the Pentagon has turned into. It’s leaving the services with too-few overpriced and expensive to maintain platforms.

I suspect the best way forward would be to go for incremental improvements and modifications to existing platforms with new weapon system buys rather than trying to build a “revolution” into each new platform.
